The Green Lady

£25.00£40.00

In the 30s the mortality rate among young children was very high, mainly through lack of vitamins and sub standard living in working class conditions. To assist mothers in coping with poor health, the authorities appointed nurses to oversee areas and visit families, check out children and where required, arrange treatment for them. The nurses wore dark green uniforms and became known as ‘Green Ladies’. This painting shows on Green lady holding court with women of different age groups, talking to, advising and generally looking after their welfare.
