A Fuel for the Fire

£40.00£60.00

Coalmen, with horse drawn carts, would normally deliver coal to households, but in winter, if there was ice or snow about, coalmen were reluctant to risk horses in case they slipped or fell, and this would put the man out of business. So, in bad weather they would make it known that coal was still available, provided you came to the rail yard — where he received his coal. A guidy barrow or prams were ideal coal carriers. For a small sum of money, coal was shovelled into your vehicle and taken home. So the home fires were kept burning.
