Survival of the Fittest

The Backcourts of the tenements were the playground of the children, and the magical world of make believe provided the opportunity to meet many challenges. A broken wall or a garbage shed roof could become a fort, guarded by redcoats of legionaries or maybe Indians. Rolling in a barrel, lighting a fire, playing see-saw, sailing a ship in a puddle of dirty water or a game of football — all a part of children’s activities, which saw energy being burned off in so many different ways.
