Going to the Steamie

£25.00£40.00

Domestic washing machines were things for the future, so the washing of blankets, curtains, and other heavy clothing had to be done in a communal wash-house, provided by the Council, or Corporation as it was known then. These places were commonly known as ‘Steamies’. It was necessary to book a period of time, 30 — 60 minutes, for a machine. Women had to take the washing to the steamie by various methods, in prams or bogeys or barrows, or by simply carrying it tied up in a sheet or table cloth into a bundle over their shoulders. Boys could earn themselves pocket money by doing this work for the women.
